During this workshop teachers will gain an understanding of Disciplinary Literacy in Social Studies. Participants will gain instructional strategies for teaching reading, writing, speaking, and listening while using historical thinking skills to enhance social studies instruction. Participants will take away techniques to help students think in social studies and to transfer that thinking into writing and communication. Participants will gain knowledge of the inquiry cycle (questioning, research, analysis, communication) for analyzing primary sources, the process for identifying sourcing and bias, considering point-of-view, and specialized vocabulary. This session is for middle-level social studies teachers.
